What Keir Starmer's Departure Can Teach Us About Succession Planning

Sir Keir Starmer’s resignation today has sparked one immediate question: who takes over now?

Politicians, journalists and party members are all focused on what happens next, who is in charge and whether there is a clear plan for the future. It’s a question that extends far beyond Westminster.

In fact, it’s the very same question many families never ask themselves: If you weren’t here tomorrow, who would take over your affairs?

Most people assume their loved ones will simply “sort everything out”. Unfortunately, life is rarely that straightforward.

Without a valid Will, your estate may not pass in the way you intended. Without appropriate executors, those left behind may struggle to deal with your affairs. Without a Lasting Power of Attorney, your family could face significant difficulties if you lose capacity during your lifetime.

Just as governments require succession plans, families do too.

The reality is that none of us stay in charge forever. The question is whether we’ve made preparations for the day when someone else has to step in.

For some people, that means reviewing an outdated Will. For others, it means considering who should act as their executor or trustee. For many, it means putting a Lasting Power of Attorney in place before it becomes necessary.

The best succession plans are rarely needed immediately. Their value lies in knowing they’re there when the unexpected happens.

So as the country discusses who might be handed the keys to Number 10 next, it may be worth asking yourself a simpler question:

If someone had to step into your shoes tomorrow, would they know what to do?

If the answer is no, it may be time to review your estate planning arrangements.

Westminster will soon have a new leader. The question is whether you have put the right people in place to lead when your time comes.

If your Will hasn’t been reviewed recently, or you haven’t yet considered how your affairs would be managed in your absence, now may be the perfect opportunity to start the conversation.
