Holiday Policies
and Entitlements for Businesses

Ensuring your employees receive their correct annual leave entitlement is a statutory requirement but can also be subject to more generous contractual provisions.

Failure to adhere to employees’ holiday entitlement can amount to costly Employment Tribunal claims and as such clear and robust policies and internal procedures are imperative.

There can be exceptions to this, including where there is a policy that allows for the employee to carry annual leave over, or when the employee has been unable to take their annual leave due to sickness absence.

  3. Can an employer reject an employee’s holiday request?

Yes, an employer has the right to reject a holiday request for business reasons, provided that the refusal complies with notice requirements.
