Lifetime trusts

One of the most common things we hear from clients isn’t:

“I need a trust.”

It’s:

“I want my children to inherit, but I’m worried about what they’ll do with the money.”

And honestly, that’s a perfectly reasonable concern.

Maybe your child is only 18. Maybe they’ve never managed a significant sum of money before. Maybe they’re in a relationship you’re not entirely convinced will last. Or maybe you simply want to help them throughout their life rather than hand over everything in one go.

That’s where a Lifetime Trust can come in.

Giving Away Assets Without Losing Sleep

A lifetime trust allows you to move assets out of your own name while deciding who benefits from them and how they’re managed.

Think of it as the difference between handing someone the keys to a Ferrari and keeping hold of the keys whilst still letting them go for a drive.

The beneficiaries may benefit from the assets, but the trustees remain in control of how and when those assets are used.

For many families, that’s a much more comfortable arrangement than making an outright gift.

The ‘What If?’ Planning Tool

The real power of a lifetime trust is that it helps answer life’s awkward “what if?” questions.

  • What if your child gets divorced?
  • What if they run into financial difficulties?
  • What if they’re simply not ready to manage a large inheritance?
  • What if you want money to benefit your grandchildren one day as well?

A trust can provide a layer of protection that an outright gift simply cannot.

It’s Not Just for the Ultra-Wealthy

There’s a misconception that trusts are only for aristocrats, celebrities and people with country estates.

In reality, many people establishing trusts are simply trying to protect a family home, investment portfolio or savings that they’ve spent decades building.

They’re not trying to control their family from beyond the grave.

They’re trying to avoid seeing hard-earned assets disappear because of poor decisions, divorce or unforeseen circumstances.

Trusts Are About Control (And That’s Not a Bad Thing)

The word “control” sometimes gets a bad reputation.

But if you’ve spent years building wealth, it’s natural to want some say in how it’s used.

A lifetime trust allows you to support loved ones whilst putting sensible safeguards in place.

Because contrary to popular belief, good estate planning isn’t about avoiding tax or filling lever arch files with paperwork.

It’s about making sure that what you’ve built ends up where you intended.

And sometimes, the smartest gift isn’t handing over the money.

It’s making sure it’s protected first.
